I have been so busy being a vendor at wedding shows these last few months that I have neglected virtually everything else. I have noticed a few things since doing these shows. The first thing is that there are so many photographers at bridal shows. Some are professional, great and know their stuff. Others just thought “Hey I’m a stay at home mom, I have a camera, why not be a ‘photographer’ and earn some money”. I am sure I am going to mad someone mad , but you get what you pay for. Brides, do your homework and check your photographers references. This is the one area where I would recommend not skimping. When you are 80 years old, all you are going to have is your pictures.
Second, I am so tired of seeing selfie booths at weddings. It is time to come up with a new trend to entertain guests at weddings. They are cheesy and overdone. I know in the day of Instagram and selfies, everyone wants to be famous, but let’s let this trend rest….please.
Finally, in all those magazines, apps and books that have wedding checklists, there is not a send off. Not at the one month till you say I do; not two weeks; not even one week before. Nowhere does it ask the bride what she wants to do for the send off. If you are lucky, your coordinator will ask what your send off plans are. What I am finding is that most brides neglect this detail and are hurriedly scrambling at the last minute to figure out what they want to do and then finding supplies.
There are various things that you can do for a send off: bubbles, balloons, throwing flower pedals, confetti cannons and of course sparklers. Whatever you decide, make sure you leave ample time to either order or go purchase the items.
Utah Sparklers carries both the 20 inch and 36 inch gold metal sparklers. Make sure you always get gold, metal sparklers if you decide to do a sparkler send off. Sparklers are best used at night photograph the best when it is dark. Not only can you use sparklers for a send off, but you can capture super cute, fun pictures with them. More on that in an upcoming post.
Bubbles and balloons are pretty easy to come by. Most Big box stores, like WalMart, Dollar tree and Party stores carry bubbles year round. One thing to keep in mind when doing bubbles for your send off is they typically photograph better in the day time.
Confetti cannons are fun, but also very messy. If you don’t know what a confetti cannon is let me try to explain. They are cardboard tubes that are not explosive, but rather use compressed air to launch colored paper or streamers anywhere from 10-30 feet into the air. Many venues do not allow these because of the clean up involved. There is a water soluble, biodegradable version on the market and if you are insistent on this being your send off, you can try to convince the venue to let you use it. Confetticannonstore has a great selection as well as Oriental Trading. Same as bubbles, these are better suited for day time use.
If you decide to do flower petals, check with your venue first as most only allow real flowers to be thrown. Artificial flowers are still the same mess as confetti cannons. Sams Club has the best deal on real rose petals. Their site recommends ordering them to be delivered at least 2 days before your wedding. These can be used for day or night time send offs as they photograph very well at either time.
Whatever you decide, don’t neglect your send off. The send off is your family and friend’s way of seeing you off as a newly married couple. It is a way of celebrating your first night as husband and wife. Plan this detail just as you would any other part of your wedding.
